9) A GOD & DOG IDEA

Let me take the Bible, it being the world's best-selling holy book. In that book it is written that murderers, fortune-tellers, idol-worshippers, men who go with prostitutes and various other categories of sinful persons are not to be allowed into heaven. This heavenly ban also applies to dogs. So, never mind the fortune-tellers condemned to hell, what have all the world's dogs done wrong?

Dogs, man's best friend, are one of the myriad creatures inhabiting planet Earth. Have they made war against anybody? Have they perpetuated a holocaust against cats? Did they not look after the sheep while those famous shepherds left their post to visit the manger? What's the biblical hang up about dogs?

And if dogs are not allowed into heaven can there be any hope for the owners of dogs? Will the aiders and abettors of these presumably vile and sinful canines be consigned to some doggy hell? Surely those who feed and shelter dogs are equally to blame for whatever sins these dogs are guilty of. And then there's the blind person who owns a guide dog, is this unfortunate to be damned just like his dog? But dogs, they will tell you, have no souls.

One of the great gifts that God gave humanity is a sense of humour. So where's the humour in this severe book the Bible? Where are the jokes?

The world abounds with lovely friendly dogs, many with a wonderful sense of humour. And there must be many such dogs when you look at the terrible state of some of the people they have to walk around with. And if there is a neurotic dog it's probably not his fault. It'll be humans who have caused his neurosis by too much in-breeding and then keeping him in an artificial environment like a city.

But the Bible is not alone in its hatred of dogs. In another holy book, the Koran, there's also something written about dogs. It states that the angel Gabriel will not visit a house which contains a dog, and that means even a picture of a dog!

Just who is man's best friend, his GOD or his DOG?
